Welcome to the "Heartland" of Wisconsin
In the Kickapoo Valley you will encounter friendly people, warm hospitality and something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Vernon County was by-passed by the glaciers of long ago, so its' hills are intact to explore and photograph. You will see picture-postcard scenes, panoramic views and wonderful fall color.
Follow the Great River Road, enjoy rustic drives on back country paths, tent camp in several state parks, ride the Sparta-Elroy Bike Trail, horse ride on the 8500 acre Kickapoo Reserve Land or sample the many wares available from our Amish Settlements. Visit Wildcat State Park for a nature hike and bird watching, rent a canoe and drift down the crooked Kickapoo River or fish in several grade A trout streams. Children will take pleasure in seeing the exotic animals at the local zoo/farm, or maybe purchase a Davy Crockett cap or moccasins from a local craftsman. Perhaps you would like to search for antiques, explore a musuem, visit a converted barn and find out about soap making or learn more about the native peoples of this region - you can find it here. Hunters can seek deer or turkey, golfers can enjoy several local courses, visitors can stay in accomodations ranging from primitive cabin to wonderfully restored Bed & Breakfasts; we think there is something for almost everyone here in our own special slice of paradise.
A few local yearly events include the Snowflake Ski Jumping Tournament, a Syttende Mai festival in Westby, Cesky Den celebration in Hillsboro, 4th of July parades and fireworks, Viola Horse & Colt Show, Wild West Days and the Festival of Lights in Viroqua, Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration in La Farge, car shows and much, much more!
